I’m standing to become the MP for Kingston & Surbiton constituency. I’ve seized the opportunity of being the candidate to make a start, campaigning on local priorities like school places, crime, anti-social behaviour and the NHS, fighting for local services and helping people with individual problems when they haven’t known where else to turn.
I live in Kingston and commute most days to work in central London (see the ‘about me’ section for more). It’s a great place to live and bring up a family, but things could be so much better. The country has suffered under this Government, but this area has paid a particularly high price, with high taxes and very little in return.
The good news is that we don’t have to put up with this for much longer. Gordon Brown has to hold an election by the end of June and the local elections will be on May 6th. Soon we’ll have a chance to vote for change. If you like to know more, or would like to get involved in the election campaign, please get in touch.

Helen will fight for Kingston Hospital - IF it needs saving
Shadow Schools Secretary assures parents of school places solution

Helen and Michael Gove MP,
Shadow Secretary of State for
Schools, visited a local primary
school, and learnt how the
school is coping with two bulge
classes. He then met teachers,
school governors and parents
in Surbiton to discuss their
concerns. The need for more
schools and lack of sites was
a hot topic.
Mr Gove assured Helen that a
Conservative Government would
commit funding for expanding or building new schools to meet the need for extra places locally, despite the tough financial
circumstances.
Local Lib Dem MPs have launched a campaign to ‘Save Kingston Hospital’. Helen is deeply concerned about any possibility that the hospital might be threatened.
"I assure you, if Kingston Hospital is under threat I will fight to protect it and the vital services it provides. I will also have the backing of the Conservative party
nationally," Helen said. David
Cameron has promised to stop
Labour's forced closure of A&E
and maternity units.
When Helen attended the
Hospital board meeting,
the hospital management
criticised the campaign, calling it
irresponsible. They insist that
“there are no secret plans to
close A&E or maternity units at
Kingston Hospital”.
Richmond Park parking charges update
I'm very concerned about the emails going around from the Lib Dems about this.
Conservatives are resolutely opposed to the introduction of car parking charges in Richmond Park and Bushy Park. Nationally, we will scrap the charges if we form the next Government.
Oyster PAYG finally arrives
Although we’ve been able to use Oyster cards at local
stations for some time, we’ve missed out on the flexibility of Oyster Pay-As-You-Go. However, Helen’s work behind the scenes has paid off, with the introduction of PAYG in January 2010.
Make 2010 the year of change
One thing is certain:
there has to be a general
election in the first half of
2010.
That election will be
an opportunity to bring
about the change our
country needs. But we
won’t get that change
unless we vote for it. To
get a majority in Parliament and form a new Government, the Conservatives have to hold every seat they won in 2005 – plus an extra 117 seats. This would be the biggest number of Conservative gains at a general election since 1931. That’s why Conservatives up and down the country are working hard to earn your support.
Here in Kingston & Surbiton the main hope for Labour party is that enough people will vote Lib Dem to keep Gordon Brown in power for five more years. In Kingston & Surbiton only Helen Whately can rid us of Gordon Brown and this discredited Labour government. In the 2010 general election, every vote will count.
NO to parking charges in Richmond and Bushy Parks
Over 1,000 people joined the rally against Government plans to introduce parking charges in local parks.
Helen campaigned alongside organiser Zac Goldsmith (Conservative Candidate for Richmond Park) at the cross party rally. This is the latest move in an ongoing campaign. Hundreds of local residents who use Richmond and Bushy Park will be affected.
